Wix AI, Durable, Framer AI, and the problem with one-click websites

July 19, 2026

Credit where it's due. The one-click AI builders made something real. Answer a few questions, wait a few seconds, and where you had nothing you now have a modern, mobile-friendly site. For a brand-new business that needs anything online by Friday, that's a genuine gift. We won't pretend otherwise.

But be precise about what they do, because the gap between that and what most businesses need is the whole story.

A one-click builder restyles. You give it a category, "yoga studio," "electrician," "coffee shop," and it generates a site that looks like a good one of those. Clean layout, sensible sections, plausible placeholder copy. Competent, and generic on purpose, because the tool doesn't know anything about you. It knows your category. It hands you the average of your category, dressed nicely.

Which is the exact thing this series keeps warning about. A site that could belong to anyone. The polished version of "we're passionate about quality." It restyles the generic instead of replacing it, because replacing it would mean knowing your license number, your years in business, your founding story, the thing you say on the phone. It never asked. It couldn't use the answer.

That's the line between generating a website and redesigning yours. Generation starts from a category and fills a template. A redesign starts from your actual site and your actual business and digs up what's already true and buried. One gives you the average. The other gives you you.

Two more questions, and neither is about looks.

Do you own it, or are you renting? Most one-click platforms host your site in their system, in their format. It looks like yours. It isn't portable like yours. Try to leave and you often find you can take the content, maybe, if you're lucky, but not the site. You weren't buying a website. You were renting a room and paying monthly to keep the lights on. Fine, if you knew. A bad surprise if you didn't.

Did anyone make a real decision? A generated site has no point of view. Nobody chose to lead with your credentials instead of a stock photo. Nobody decided your founding story was the spine. The tool optimized for "looks like a website." "Looks like a website" is not the same as "makes a stranger choose you."

A methodology answers all three differently. It starts from your real site, finds your real specificity, makes deliberate calls about what to lead with, and hands you files you own and can host anywhere. Slower. Harder. Which is why the one-click tools don't do it, and why we spent a year doing it by hand before teaching software to do it fast.

There is a fourth difference, and it is the one a one-click builder structurally cannot match. The site a one-click tool hands you is a finished thing, a dead end. The site Pages hands you is built to become the front door to a system that gets smarter. It is structured so that Prospect, the behavioral engine coming to the Mother Lode suite, can later read each visitor and lead with what is most likely to move that person, without a rebuild. Prospect is on the roadmap, and we will say the day it lands; what ships today is a site designed to welcome it. A generator gives you a website. Pages gives you the front door.

Now the fair part, because this series doesn't trash-talk. Sometimes a one-click builder is exactly right. Brand new, no site, no track record yet, nothing buried to surface, and you need a clean placeholder online today? Use one. Generation is the right move when there's nothing specific to find. Start there. Come back for a real redesign when you've got a story worth telling and a site that's gone quiet about it.

The one-click builders solved "I have nothing." Real problem, solved well. The harder, more common problem is "I have something good and my website doesn't say so." That one doesn't get solved by generating an average. It gets solved by finding what's already true about you and putting it first. Different problem. Different tool.

The honest part

no site and no track record yet? A one-click builder is a smart, cheap start. The redesign matters the day you have a real story your site is hiding.
